Hugggzzzhhh

.... to Archie G for "Hot Fuzz" and "Pompeii"! I started reading it as soon as I got it out of the box. I've always been fascinated by Pompeii and meant to visit it last year, then the dollar started tanking. Stoopid republicans. Thanks so much, AG!!

The book is pretty good. I liked the "color" added to some of the historical figures. Pliny is fleshed out in a nice way.

Back in 1995, while I was in the Navy, I spent two days at Pompeii. Camped (illegally and dangerously) on Vesuvius. I recommend that you don't do that. It is very dangerous and smelly-- but the view is stunning.

I'll try and dig out some of the old pictures and scan them. One funny thing about the city-- you see penises carved into the curbs. If you follow where they point, they lead to the main whore house. There are some outrageously funny murals and painted glass scenes in there. How glass has survived this long is a true mystery.

The Pompeii historical museum is located in Naples, and is a MUST see. The craft of the people of 79ad is stunning. art and simple things like cutlery are reminiscent of stuff made during the Art Nouveau period of the 20th Century.

It's funny-- I remember as a kid all I knew of Pompeii were the body casts, but never the salacious grafitti! There was a whole Nat Geo mag devoted to the people who died, but they never showed how they lived. Amazing. I really hope to get there one of these days.
